Baby Shower Gift

Baby Shower Gift

Not everything I do from Pinterest works out for me.  I only chose one baby shower gift to make from Pinterest.  I was already doing the frame with her name.   However I still didn’t get the gift completed and had to improvise.  I spent months looking for cute bags to do the Ready to Go bags.  I finally had to go with baggies.

You can see her the intended CUTE gift:  http://inspireco.blogspot.com/2012/04/baby-shower-gift.html

READY TO GO BAGS

These bags have everything needed for a diaper change.

They can be left in car, grandparents, or use when in a hurry to pack diaper bag.

Build Baby Ellie’s Library baby shower

Build Baby Ellie’s Library baby shower

a20130818_18

On Saturday I hosted our family’s baby shower for my daughter in law.   She was having three showers so decided to go with a book theme with mine.  I had a mom who read to me every day so I know how books bonds parents.   Plus books will give her the world to see too as she reads them.    So everyone brought a book with their gift instead of buying a card.  Believe it or not out of 25 plus books she didn’t receive any duplicates.

The cutest invitations ever made by a niece … thanks Eileen!! You rocked!

I did not take any pictures of the food once all the desserts were there from my sister in laws.  I also didn’t take any pix of the table decorations.  I got busy and just completely forgot to take pix.  I did take pix of her opening gifts.  There were several people who sent gifts that were not there.  So I put those pix on FB so those who sent a gift seen her enjoying it.

I do a blog on Pinterest so you know there were a few details from it.  I did omit a few things from my original to do list.  I got busy and was then smart about what I could and couldn’t do.  (truly helped on not stressing too!)  I had planned on doing lil book signs for food and do regret I didn’t find time for them.

There is a HUGE difference on hosting a party at a different location.  I have hosted Christmas a few times with 25 plus people.  However when you have to carry everything you really change your game plan.  I have some beautiful crystal bowls but the thought of carrying them led to using mostly Dollar Tree serving ware.   I would have found some cute dishes to put the silverware in but using plastic cups was more sensible.  I still had 4 bins of stuff and coolers even after downsizing twice.

I had a few a mishaps … cake was not done to specifications.  I should have made a few more side dishes.  I forgot to make the coffee and left the other waters in hubby’s car.  Other than that it went really well.  We had a great turnout with E  & A getting some fabulous gifts!   While we were at the shower, the men in our family met up for drinks to celebrate Eric becoming a dad.   It was a great afternoon and so thankful that we could do it for them!

last name goneThe gift table’s decorations:  I put a copy of her sonogram in a frame.  I spray painted a basket pink for cards and made a thank you sign for it.  (Mom is using basket for books now.)  The frame with her name, I made for her nursery.  I then laid out a pink flower garland to finish the gift table.

Hungry board

I made this storyboard of Hungry Caterpillar of Ellie growing as her mom had done the veg/fruit size each 2 weeks.  I also changed the last name of the author to our name as he shares same first name as son.  I then added mom’s name as author too.  Just thought it was a cute way to show Amanda’s last 8 months … this was my idea and not a pinterest item 🙂

I did an activity table instead of playing games.

I also made labels for the books brought to the shower … I had one I threw away so overlook the bended label since I forgot to take a pix of them.

20130818_7All the desserts hadn’t arrived yet …we had 7 different ones.  Taking home a container of desserts was one of the favors for the guests. 🙂

One sister in law brought these adorable cookies!!  They were delicious!

Another favor was gummy worms (Albenese of course!) with note saying “Thank you for making Ellie a bookworm.”

I made a few these for silverware.

cake

The cake was a disaster!  First of all it was supposed to be yellow icing to match the invite.  Then look at the writing. 🙁

But it was worse thing that happened that day and we were okay. 🙂

table

The books “Where is Ellie” and “Ellie’s Tea Party” have Ellie as an Elephant.  So went with the Pink Safari theme at Party City for decorations and paper goods.

part of tableAdded a pink box to use as a riser for the (horrible) cake.  I also decorated the trifle bowl that had the Cotton Candy Salad in it.

Thanks to all my friends and family that put up with my endless texts of pix for the shower too!!  I so appreciate the time!!!!!

Now how many days is it until Ellie arrives? 🙂

Umbrella candle and door wreaths

Umbrella candle and door wreaths

Lynn really out did herself with the little details for our Luau Party.   She made the cutest candle and door wreaths!  I was so impressed!

candle

door

You only need 2 things … foam and the umbrellas.  She had gotten a box of 250 umbrellas for $3.  The foam you can purchase at the Dollar Tree/Store.

So simple … just keep inserting the umbrellas until the foam is filled up!  Use a twist tie or piece of wire to hang the door wreath.

That is the back of the finished product.

Just too cute!  Way to go Lynn!!

Have a wonderful Friday and weekend!

I get to spend the day with the daughter shopping, having lunch at Red Lobster, and then relaxing in the pool.  It’s going to be a great day! 🙂

Luau themed party for girl’s weekend

Luau themed party for girl’s weekend

group shots

This weekend I traveled to Louisville, KY to see some of my longtime friends.  I have been blessed with several friendships that have lasted since we were teenagers. (Over 20+ years) Funny thing is three of us became friends and then found out we were cousins.  (My great grandmother and their grandpa were brother and sister.)   We’ve been friends so long we are all  family now.

We try to do a few girl’s weekends each year.  That is truly why we have remained so close.  Even longtime friendships need to be nurtured to maintain that bond. Most of us live in different areas now than our hometown of Harlan.  (Its another 4 hour drive for me from Louisville.) So Louisville is perfect location for us to meet.  We each have a 3 to 4 1/2 hour drive there.

A few weren’t able to make it and we missed them!  We also had our baby girl Allison.  We love having her with us!  She is our group picture taker too. 🙂

So we had a weekend of shopping, going out to eat, and catching up.  Then on Saturday night we had a party at home so we could talk and relax.  This was our 2nd annual themed party in June.  Last year we did an 80’s party.  This year it was Luau themed.

Lynn is such a perfect party host who even sent out Luau party invites.  She really out does herself with decorating.  It was a small party but the deco really made it more fun. Loved the huge backdrop to do our pictures!  Most items she purchased at the Dollar Tree.  So always look there before going to party stores!

deco

I will share this week how she made the candle wreaths and door hanger.  They were just too cute.  The paper lanterns lit up really nice.

Nona made a beautiful bouquet of daisies for the table.  We had matching plates, napkins, silverware, and cups.  She had matching tablecloths on the tables. The silverware was placed in a sand bucket.

more deco

We listened to island and summer music. (Of course a lot of Kenny Chesney and Jimmy Buffet.) We played games for gifts.  I didn’t win any though. 🙁 We did a few games of beach bingo.  We all brought a gift and played a gift giving game.  (I got an adorable Vera Bradley keychain.)  I had also made up a trivia game about our hometown.

We each also got a bracelet at the start of our party.  You were not allowed to say the words NO or KNOW.  I lost mine five minutes into game, lol.   So all night you would take the bracelets when said.  At the end of the night who had the most bracelets won a gift.

We also did the hulla hoop and limbo.  This girl is not limber for either but at least tried, lol. We had a storm come in and had to go inside for awhile.  Didn’t stop our fun!

hulla hoop

We had some delicious food and drinks!  I made my sweet & spicy meatballs, a cotton candy salad, adult strawberries dipped in chocolate, and an adult dreamsicle drink.  I will share those this week and link back once done.  We also had turtle bars, cornflake candy, fruit tray with pineapples, watermelon, cantaloupe, and strawberries, frozen grapes, cucumber bread, chickfli nuggets, chips and dip, and strawberry daiquiris.  Allison put the chip dip in a large margarita glass and it was so cute.

We all wore leis and flip flops. We took pictures in a hulla girl cutout.  We also had several different glasses to pose in.  It was fun doing the cute shots.

fun shots

So this week I will share some great recipes and crafts we did for the party.  It was a wonderful weekend!   Love my friends dearly and can’t wait for next year’s 70’s party!!

So plan your next getaway with your girlfriends, life is too short to not be enjoying some girl time!  Plus it’s much cheaper than therapy. 🙂

Homemade Air Fresheners

Homemade Air Fresheners

af

I have a cat so I am always worrying about the smell in our home.  I was really excited to try these homemade gel air fresheners.  They took maybe five minutes to make and then overnight they gelled up.  I am really excited to see if the scents last.  I used orange essentials oils and they smell great!!  So far successful pin!  (Will update on their lasting power.)

This is another gift you could help your kids make for grandma’s on Mothers Day.  You will have to pour the boiling mix into the jars though.  They can help you measure out the water, salt, food coloring, and essential oils.  The kids could decorate the jars with stickers too.

I only had small 6 oz mason jars so the third jar was only filled half way up.

Homemade Air Fresheners

Very simple ingredients:

2 cups of COLD water

Food coloring

1 Tablespoon of salt

A box of Gelatin -will need all 4 packs  ( usually located near the pudding, jello, dream whip, and tapioca section)

Essential oils (I used orange)

HEATPROOF jars/glasses

 So easy to make:

Put just 2-3 drops of food coloring in each jar.

Add 30 drops of essential oils into food coloring (the more drops the stronger).

Bring 1 cup of the water to a boil.  When boiling, whisk in the gelatin packets until dissolved.

Then add other cup of cold water and the 1 T of  salt.

Mix together.

Quickly pour into jars.

Take a stick or plastic spoon and stir mixture.

Set out overnight to gel up.

Enjoy wonderful fragrance for up to a month.

Her blog has very detailed pictures so check her out!  Thanks to her for her tip!   http://www.delightfulcountrycookin.com/2010/08/homemade-air-freshener.html

Updating old mirrors/frames

Updating old mirrors/frames

before

I have had this mirror for over fifteen years with it being under the bed for the last eight.  I had finally put it in a yard sale bin.  Then I saw different mirrors painted on Pinterest and decided to update it.  So even though it was windy I had to do this project yesterday.  I am really happy with the way it came out.   I haven’t hung it yet in the bedroom but will update pictures when I do so.

I took the mirror out before painting.  I was lucky it only took unscrewing three screws.

I used spray paint and really liked this brand with it’s coverage!  I got mine at Walmart,  it was around $5.67.  The second coating was done just a few minutes after the first so quick painting and drying time.

paint

Julie tip:  I use seasonal plastic tablecloths in my kitchen.  So when I am done I like to cut them up for projects.  They are perfect for spraying painting because once done it goes to the garbage.

The last picture is not showing the true blue of the frame, the one above shows its real color better.   I really like the color and will now hang the mirror again.

Easy update!
