Get rid of any green hair from swimming!

Get rid of any green hair from swimming!

pool

We had a few days of 90 degree weather and I loved it!  I was sucking every minute of that heat up knowing I wouldn’t see it again until next summer.  I love summer and hate to see it leave!!  It went from 95 to 68 in two days … crazy!!!

I didn’t get green hair this year, yeh!!! HUGE DEAL for me.  For a couple of years until  I found the right brand of chemicals I would have that DARK HORRIBLY GONE WRONG GREEN on my ends.

I couldn’t find a commercial product to do the trick.  I had found this recipe years ago.  I wished I could tell you the site that I got the recipe from to give credit but I couldn’t find it again.

One thing …. everything I read said that fresh lemons worked much better than the concentrated. (Which may explain why the lemon juice concentrate hadn’t worked before for me.)

There has never been green left when doing this concoction!    So just wanted to share if any reader ever had this problem …. I keep this recipe written down in my address book so I never lose it.   It took forever to find something that works!

Remove green from hair due to swimming

1/4 cup of FRESH lemon juice (one big lemon)

2 Tablespoons of Baking soda

1 teaspoon mild shampoo

Mix together in a small bowl. The mixture will get fizzy from the combo of BS and lemon juice.

Wet hair.

Mine was really concentrated on ends when green so I just kept adding more to them and then all over. Put on a shower cap for 20 minutes. Rinse it out then shampoo again. (I did a deep conditioning treatment afterwards.)  All ugly green hair gone and ready for Fall!!

Best tip is ALWAYS wet your hair before swimming so it doesn’t absorb any chemicals to turn it green. 🙂

Still waiting on that precious grandbaby to arrive 🙂

Keep Apples or Pears from browning …. will never buy prepackaged slices again!

Keep Apples or Pears from browning …. will never buy prepackaged slices again!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor day weekend!!  I have some great posts to share this week.   I couldn’t decide which one to share first but decided to go with this money saving tip.   Tomorrow I have a wonderful roast recipe to share so be on the lookout!

I am one of those that if fruit and vegetables are already cut up, I am more likely to eat them.  So I just love that this pin worked and now can make my own snack bags!   So quick to do too!!!

Keep Apples or Pears from browning:

All you need are apples of your choice and a bottle of 7 up or Sprite.

We have loved our Pampered Chef Apple Corer for years and is so perfect for this …

cored apple

I then slice the pieces one more time …

sliced again

Soak in a bowl filled with Sprite or 7 up for 3-5 minutes.  (I did 5 min.)

soak

Pour out soda and lay out on a paper towel to dry.  I turned mine over after a minute or two to dry both sides really well.

dry apples

Put in baggies and get out as much air as possible … I used the Ziplock snack size baggies and made three bags out of two apples.

slices

This blogger has 4 ways to keep apples and pears from browning.  Two of my sister in laws told me that lemon water works too so will try next.  Thanks to the blogger for her tip!!  http://www.theyummylife.com/prevent_apple_and_pear_slices_from_browning

4 days and still not a hint of brown on them!!

Vinegar does kill weeds!

Vinegar does kill weeds!

vinegar

Weeds are so bad this year!!  With Abe Lincoln, the cat, I have to be careful on what and where I spray to kill weeds.   I had seen this tip several times but had yet to try it.  It killed this weed in one day!  The crab grass is taking a day or two longer but is def dying!  So if you want a cheap and safe for animals weed killer … regular white vinegar in a spray bottle is the way to go!!  Very impressed with how fast its working too!

Tip:  I just used an old cleaning spray bottle to do mine.

Have a great day!! 🙂

Frozen grapes to keep drinks cold

Frozen grapes to keep drinks cold

f grapes

I had mentioned to Lynn about doing frozen grapes for the Luau party.  Then Nona came up it with out knowing my idea.  So apparently great minds think alike. 🙂

Freeze grapes to add to your drinks to keep colder longer.

You can also soak them in wine for 24 hours.  Then roll in sugar and freeze.  Add to your wine and eat once done with glass of wine.

Clearance Flowers

Clearance Flowers

I just assumed everyone knew to look for clearance flowers.  My neighbor was shocked when I told her that most of my flowers were bought on clearance.  So I thought I’d make sure everyone was aware the benefit of clearance flowers.

My mom taught me years ago to always go to the back in Lowes’s garden center.  Walmart and our nursery both always have great clearance racks too.  I have never had any problems with the flowers on clearance dying once home.
My wheelbarrow full of flowers were all bought on clearance a few weeks ago. (Except the 3 pink/white geranium plants which were $1.49 each on sale). I paid $15 total for all of them and look how beautiful they have grown …

This wheelbarrow was a gift from my dad who had our cousin Roger make it for me.

One of my fav gifts ever!

These are a few I picked up yesterday at Lowes for $7 which included a basket of flowers, a 6 pack of wave petunias, several inpatients, geraniums, and others.  They are now all potted and ready to grow more beautiful at a quarter of the price.

I also love going to the nursery at end of season for perennial flowers for next summer.  That is a lot of my blooming fun the next spring to see them.  It saves so much money.

Just remember … the weekend isn’t far away!  🙂
